Baby Buysse's First Trimester
First Trimester Symptom Checklist:
1. Vomiting and Nausea - I couldn't find an exact statistic on how many women experience this during their first trimester ... 50%, 75%, 85%, 90%, nearly all ... except me. I'm extremely lucky to have not been sick or nauseous at all.
2. Frequent Urination - Check! Every night between 12-2am I was up. Thankfully I was able to go right back to sleep.
3. Fatigue/Lack of Energy - I rarely felt like I could fall asleep sitting at my desk but I did start getting ready for bed around 8pm versus 10pm. My energy level was WAY down and I lacked motivation to do much of anything so there were several lazy weekends that were perfect for a good Netflix binge or getting in to a new book.
4. Sore/Growing Boobs - This was no joke, seriously. Before I took a positive test, this was my first sign that something was a little off. I endured 2 solid months of incredibly sore boobs and like they needed to grow any more, I've now invested a small fortune in all new bras.
5. Mood Swings - I had two distinct, extreme mood swings. Both at work. Both ended in tears. Both came out of no where! Little things that wouldn't have normally set me off but did in a big way. I had to play them off as I had a lot on my plate and was super stressed out. I work in a very busy office and everyone has their mood swings and tantrums from time to time. Mine were just more hormonal.
6. Food Aversions/Cravings - I cut morning coffee immediately and switched to tea, mainly to lower my caffeine intake but I actually couldn't stand the taste of coffee. I was baffled how quickly I could hate something I love so much. Nothing else has bothered me so far, even raw meat and chicken. A coworker was microwaving cabbage for lunch for a few weeks but who wouldn't hate the smell of cooked cabbage that lingers in the air for hours? Cravings have been specific but short-lived; pineapple frozen yogurt, Kraft mac & cheese, dill pickle Pringles, sour Starburst, and homemade waffles.
7. Bloating - This has been pretty extreme. In fact, I haven't had a huge appetite because most foods either give me a tummy ache or heartburn. I actually can't even eat as much in a sitting as I used to be able to. I'm convinced my growing uterus has shrunk my stomach. I've managed to lose 7lbs during these first few months so it's either due to my appetite or my lack of adult beverages.
We met with our first Midwife on February 27th at week 9. I've been asked several times why we've decided to go the Midwife route versus an MD. It was a simple decision for me and Joel was happy to go along with whatever I was comfortable with. Being my first pregnancy, I wanted a more personalized and holistic experience and to feel like I wasn't being rushed through my appointments so I could ask as many ridiculous questions as I could think of (I did ask if I could overbake the bun in the oven because I'm such a hot sleeper). At each of our appointments we will meet with one of the 6 Midwives so by the time baby comes, we will feel comfortable with whoever is on call to deliver. With an MD, there is no guarantee that our doctor would be available to deliver. I will deliver at the hospital birth center which we plan to tour at the end of August.
Our first Ultrasound was on March 29th, during week 13. Seeing our little one for the first time was such a special moment. Baby was curled up sleeping so it took a lot of poking and prodding and moving around to wake baby up so the Ultrasound Tech could get all of the necessary measurements. The heartbeat was strong at 155bpm. Our favorite picture either looks like baby was waving to us or is a thumb sucker already.
We've been overly cautious in sharing our news with most of our friends, family, and coworkers until after we reached this point. I was terrified of my chances at miscarrying but Joel has been nothing but supportive and positive this whole time. I've dreamed about this for so long and I have to pinch myself to remind me that this is really happening. I thank my lucky stars daily that this tiny soul chose us. We already love you so much, Baby Buysse!
